Lyrics- (metrolyrics.com)

Apehead's brother wants to beat up Paul

The boys have gone to watch

Some of the girls are down at the mall

Justine's got cherry cola and scotch

Later on it's everyone around to Beck's

Her parents are away in New York

Sara well, she just can't bear

The stupidity, the boredom, the grind

She stays at school so that she can hear

The sound of the life of the mind

.

And it's noisy up there

It rocks me like a mother

Rosa Parks and DNA

Joan of Arc and JFK

But it's noisy up there

(Noisy up there)

It rocks me like a mother

.

Oh, ohh, oh, ohh

Oh, oh, oh

Oh, oh, oh

.

She's cut 'em all out of her social circle

Won't introduce them to Lincoln or Frost

Doesn't want to let them get to know Keats or Studs Terkel

They'll never know what they have lost

But Sara well, she just can't bear

The stupidity, the boredom, the grind

She stays at school so that she can hear

The sound of the life of the mind

.

And it's noisy up there

(Noisy up there)

It rocks me like a mother

Copernicus and Fortune's Wheel

Plato, Glen Gould and the New Deal

And it's noisy up there

(Noisy up there)

It rocks me like a mother

.

Sara already knows pretty soon she'll be leaving

Well, she's hoovered up whatever she can find

But she doesn't want to hear about

Pregnancies, foam fights, TV, take-outs, have sex, weddings

The sound of the life she'll leave behind

.

Yeah, it's noisy up there

(Noisy up there)

It rocks me like a mother

Oh, ohh, oh, ohh

Oh, oh, oh

And it's noisy up there

(Noisy up there)

It rocks me like a mother

Oh, ohh, oh, ohh

Oh, oh, oh

since the lyrics are written by Nick Hornby, probably not, but that's an interesting thought....sounds like it could be post-relationship with Zac

...I have no idea what this song is about. Can someone please explain?

Nahh, it's definitely "well" in the song. Even though the song is about the brilliant and talented Nerd Goddess, Sara Vowell.

I agree with you that this is what Nick Hornby wrote, but I've listened pretty closely to that line in the song, and I'm pretty sure Ben Folds is singing it as "well". I expect for the album, he wanted to depersonalize the reference a little.

They have a transcript up at NPR from an interview. Not letting me post the link for some reason, but NPR doesn't get things wrong. :) Plus Nick Hornby has said that's who he wrote it about (they're writing buddies).

I always thought "Ben Folds Five" was hilarious! I guess I'm as dumb as Ben Folds and his Five. Love this new album, especially the Nick Hornsby collab. He's amazing! But then Ben produced a brilliant Shatner album, making him utterly awesome too. Glad these guys are back.

On the lyrics: it's "Sarah Vowell," like the writer, not "Sara well." My fave song on the album for sure.

You know what they say, "If you can't draw a crowd, draw dicks on the wall."
