Ben E King - Gypsy

This song was written by "Nugetre, Leiber, Stoller & Russell".

Russell is Bertrand Russell Berns, who wrote many lovely songs, "A Little Bit Of Soap" (Jarmels), "Cry To Me" & "Down In The Valley" (Solomon Burke), "Tell Him" (Exciters), "Hang On Sloopy" (McCoys), "Twist & Shout" (Isley Brothers), "Here Comes The Night" (Lulu, Them), "Piece Of My Heart" (Erma Franklin), "Baby Let Me Take You Home" (Animals), "One Way Love" (Drifters, Cliff Bennett & The Rebel Rousers), "Under The Boardwalk" (Drifters), "Brown Eyed Girl" (Van Morrisson)... and others.

Leiber & Stoller have written many, many songs for Elvis, Coasters, Ben E King and many others and worked with Bert in The Brill Building, New York City.

Hundreds of sixties hits were written there by them and other famous songwriters: Pomus-Shuman, Bacharach-David, Sedaka-Greenfield, Goffin-King, Mann-Weil, Greenwich-Barry & Phil Spector.

Nugetre was the name of Ahmet Ertegün, spelt backwards. He was founder and president of Atlantic Records who also wrote some classic blues and pop songs and served as Chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

He championed such artists a Ben E. King, Solomon Burke, Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, along with Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Genesis, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and more.

Didn't he married in 1964? Glad he likes Italian music......I'm Italian and I love his songs. Have you got any other information about Mr King?

If anyone who is younger than 45-yrs. old, and are not familiar with Mr. King's preferences in music, he has stated that he has had a love for Italian romantic diddys since he and his wife's honeymoon to that country in the late 50s. He was not unusal as the early post-war pop music scene was raging with latin music themes and orchestral modes. Italian-inflence music ("VOLARE", etc.) and of course Frank, Dean, Mario, Rudy, Jerry, Henry, etc. were the marquee stars!
