In the 80's. REM would play a 'surprise show' at the 40 Watt in between summer and fall quarters at UGA. They would play four songs from their new album, then two older songs... then go back next door to their offices (a house on Clayton St.) I remember them playing this song like it was yesterday. They opened with it. It ROCKED!!!! Boy I miss those days. Jeffro lives......

“Begin the Begin" is a metaphorical call to arms. All that you (they) know, all material things, all of this will turn to dust and a new conscious will arise. Again, metaphorically speaking. Myths are metaphors. Begin the begin...Begin The Begin:“Let's begin again, begin the beginLet's begin again like Martin Luther zenThe mythology begins the begin”

An overlooked signpost of R.E.M.'s political slant at this time, Begin the Begin, from its bastardization of the Cole Porter classic song, quickly establishes itself as a song to be reckoned with. Make your own 2nd LP Reckoning references here. The Only Vote That Matters was clearly Stipe's intention and hopeful takeaway, as I recall, voter turnouts for the Reagan years were woefully low.

What a great song. It's heavy, melodic, offbeat and intelligent all at once, with great lyrics and vocals. This song was ahead of its time, in my opinion; it's insane how a song like this was released in 1986.

classic comment, obviously! Oh, wait, fuck those four (4) idiots, although there is no accounting for tastes and these people are entitled to their opinion. Jesus, I just threw up up in my mouth just saying that shit... Cheers!

A group that plays music, a form of expression, should keep their thoughts to themselves...Right...

Further proof that R.E.M. has disproved southern stereotypes for over 30 years.
