For those who want to lyrics:A fine young man it was indeed,He was mounted on his milk-white steed; He rode, he rode himself all alone,Until he came to lovely Joan."Good morning to you, pretty maid."And, "Twice good morning, sir", she said.He gave her a wink, she rolled her eye.Says he to himself, "I'll be there by and by.""Oh don't you think those pooks of hayA pretty place for us to play?So come with me like a sweet young thingAnd I'll give you my golden ring."Then he pulled off his ring of gold."My pretty little miss, do this behold.I'd freely give it for your maidenhead."And her cheeks they blushed like the roses red."Give me that ring into my handAnd I will neither stay nor stand,For this would do more good to meThan twenty maidenheads," said she.And as he made for the pooks of hayShe leaped on his horse and tore away.He called, he called, but it was all in vainYoung Joan she never looked back again. She didn't think herself quite safe,No, not till she came to her true love's gate. She's robbed him of his horse and ring,And left him to rage in the meadows green.(wikipedia)

This is an East Anglian folk song collected by Ralph Vaughan Williams and the melody used in the bridge in his Greensleeves Variations...haunting tune.

@macsnafu Not much of a songwriter? Go listen to Karn Evil 9 2nd impression; and that's just one of his songs.

@CirSam Idiot; look, he recreated the piece with a completely different tone, mood, and everything; he also does write his own music A LOT. For example: Tarkus Karn Evil 9 1st impression- 3rd impression Black Moon Paper Blood Jeremy Bender Benny the Bouncer The solo from Lucky Man and I'm running out of room. either way, he's fantastic. No need to be a hater ;D

@brianos8 Actually is a traditional british folk song, I heard a beautidul version of Ritchie Blackmore's album Blackmore's Kingdom as well. I strongly recommend that version!!

Keith Emerson is a great keyboard player, but he's just not much of a songwriter--better that he borrow good stuff from other people than write bad stuff. Nice to hear the original, or at least, as close to the original as we're likely to get.

this melody is used in the middle of Ralph Vaughn Williams' "Fantasia on Greensleeves."
