From Their 1993 album With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness

Slit open the skies and let out my stars

The night dies inside me

She's got ways to make me crawl

I respond like a machine

The sun shines from a thin sky

And these feelings they die

In the minds of the blind

Patterns red of love so dead

Under the floors, the dark woodsthey come back

Dark they needn't be, but your virgin blood is dead

The spark faded and gone

All the stars in her skin

The repulsion as I sin

She's roaring through my soul

All dressed in thoughts of flesh

With a beautiful wound I was born

It was all that I knew to own

Stardrowned

All the stars in her skin

The repulsion as I sin

She's roaring through my soul

Sears my nakedness my flesh

Fave ATG song, the riff starting 38 secs is horrifically dark. Really unique band

what you call structure, i call predictability/lack-of-variety/repetitive. i think SOTS is generic BECAUSE of my extensive "looking into music". it sounds too much like all the stuff i "looked into". what you say is "all over the place", is creativity and variety. the opposite of SOTS. when you've listened to a ton of music for many years you tend to get sick of the same old simplistic stuff, and look for the more unique and involved stuff that stands out. like these OLD ATG albums.

yeah slaughter of the soul is lazy and derivative and thats why people love it.

To be fair, with less gritty production and catchier riffs, SOTS opened up At the Gates to a much wider audience, thus post SOTS fans tend to dislike their earlier works. SOTS was my first AtG album, which during a time I started getting into Kataklysm and Strapping Young Lad and opening the door to much more grittier works such as this one. SOTS is the gateway album of a much more sinister genre of music.

honestly i think all at the gates have something new to offer and they don't get boring, no album sounds the same and thats not a bad thing

the last two have "proper structure" the first two have "narrative structure" if you're gonna tell much of a story through music it isn't very useful to use the same phrases over and over

@dmetlhed1 though if not for this album it would be much easier to find awesome music, since I woulndn't have this perfection to compare it too

nobody will ever create music so beautiful like this is...Metal was so good back then...so entusiastic...now metal is dead...Thanx Alf, Thanx ATG....without this album, this life will be poor :-)

I love SOTS, and yes, it is extremely over praised, but it's still a great album. However, this just blows it out of the water. I need to order this right away!

So I think your "idea" of "generic" is just soley based upon differen't style of play, not actuality of how its generic. For i'd rather head bang to the newer albums because the more thrashy sound to it does not grasp my attention. Again, based off of opinions.

I don't care what all you say, this is decent, but it isn't as good as SOTS, and Terminal Spirit Disease. You say those are generic, then you obviously do not know how to look into music. This album was all over the place, the newer albums had more proper structure to them. I see you have your own opinions and I have mine, so let this be mine. The newer albums have a structure where it has a lot more melody to it.

i bought SOTS when it came out, and even back then it sounded like that to me. i had been listening to alot of melodeath. there was quite a bit of it around back then. and i listened to the album thoroughly at least 15 times or so, thinking i must be missing something very subtle (everyone was raving about it), and i'd liked their past work so much. i wasn't able to enjoy even one song enough to keep any in my playlist.

While I do hate that people think SOTS is their best work, it only sounds generic now cause everyone ripped it off for so many years.
