Surf City Eastern Bloc was a B-side to their single No Cars Go taken from their second album Neon Bible. Its an odd song about a nameless person longing to break free at end of communism in the late 80's and go surfing? Yes you heard right, the wall is coming down and all he wants to do is go surfing?

The song isn't about a guy who just wants to go surfing, as the description suggests. Two guys (Karsten Klünder and Dirk Deckert) escaped East Germany on surfboards by riding the waves out to Denmark. And they made it. Win wrote this song about them. Hence lyrics like "Good bye Berlin / Hello autobahn". They are escaping from East to West.

It's just a horrible thing to say. He was the reason for the holocaust and the death of a whole lot of innocent people. And the US, France, and United Kingdom fought the war because someone had to stop that madman from killing more people. If he had won the war, where do you think Germany and maybe Europe as a whole would be now? I don't know if you're pro Nazi or something, but I think you need to think over what you're saying.

Did you actually just say you wish Hitler had won the war? Are you kidding me? You do realize he killed thousands and thousands of people?

Great song...strangely enough this reminds me of the hunger games national anthem theme they wrote.

This wouldn't sound out of place on Funeral, but I can see why it wasn't included in Neon Bible... brilliant song though.

I agree with you 100 percent. Their music sells itself without having the need for vulgarity or nudity in their videos.

i love in neon bible when he's playing this on piano and its just him, no big orchestra, and its so heartbreaking....this is still good too, but i love that little clip.

@VampireMiw their first e.p. is easy to find in record stores or online ---great stuff, acoustic-ish. but yeah, it's hardly surprising that a band like this just casually tosses out songs left and right. There's a U-tube vid of them covering New Order.....busking on the sidewalk.... outside one of their own shows or something! That's the mark of a good band --they just love music and playing music.

How do they have so many songs that I've never heard before? I had Funeral, Neon Bible and The Suburbs, but then yesterday I realized they have at least twenty songs I've never heard before.

Damn, this song sounds really Pink Floyd-ey, especially around 0:53 . Good stuff, wouldn't expect anything less from Arcade Fire!
