Track 15 from The Suburbs [2010]

Lyrics:

They heard me singing and they told me to stop,

Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock,

These days, my life, I feel it has no purpose,

But late at night the feelings swim to the surface.

Cause on the surface the city lights shine,

They're calling at me, "come and find your kind."

Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small,

That we can never get away from the sprawl,

Living in the sprawl,

Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,

And there's no end in sight,

I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.

We rode our bikes to the nearest park,

Sat under the swings, we kissed in the dark,

We shield our eyes from the police lights,

We run away, but we don't know why,

And like a mirror these city lights shine,

They're screaming at us, "we don't need your kind."

Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small,

That we can never get away from the sprawl,

Living in the sprawl,

Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,

And there's no end in sight,

I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.

They heard me singing and they told me to stop,

Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock.

Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small,

Can we ever get away from the sprawl?

Living in the sprawl,

Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,

And there's no end in sight,

I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.

Thanks to my friend Chloe for showing this song to me many moons ago...if it hadn't been for this song, I would have never found what "good music" really can be. This song, it's lyrics, never get old.UGH! THE MESSAGE IS SPOT ON!

219 people dislike this? That's completely ridiculous this is good stuff to who ever didn't like this.

I think the song is about how cities keep growing and getting bigger and taking over nature and beautiful landscape. and the singers like 'can we ever get away from the sprawl', meaning can we ever get from cities to nature.

I'm not sure what they're singing about, or what the lyrics mean, but this girl definitely has a beautiful voice.

Donna Summer's I Feel Love + Blondie's Heart of Glass, and others - I don't see why noting obvious similarities brings out internet heroes to defend AF's honor or prosecutors to indict them.

i don't know what they're singing about, but the music/vocals sounds like some sort of preteen dance party music. there's not much feeling of longing or sadness in the tone. it's just silly repetitive stuff with probably the worst chorus i've ever heard in my life. i don't get it at all.

I lived in the sprawl but now I live where I can see the stars. And listen to Arcade Fire sing about the sprawl. Much better :)

I've listened to this like three times today already, and I'll probably play it a few more times before the day is out. This is one of those songs that just digs into my brain and makes me feel things.
