Annette is billed as "Gay Ellis" on the label. This song does not appear to have been a hit for anybody when first released, but it has recently become popular becase of its inclusion in the animated film, "Sita Sings the Blues". Recorded July 24, 1929.

Nice song, lovely performance. This song was widely recorded, so it was popular, and it appears in several short films in 1930, one of them with Bing Crosby singing it.

I learned this song from "Sita Sings the Blues." It's quite an unusual animated film. A labor of love for the artist (Nina Paley), it combines several styles of animation with Hanshaw's classic singles and modern Indian-pop style music to tell (and comment on) two simultaneous stories. The full movie is available here on YouTube, but details of the animation are lost at lower resolution. It's quite beautiful on the DVD...
