Annette Hanshaw - Cherie, I Love You (1926), 20 October, 1926 New York. Annette on Piano (with Murray Kellner on Violin). Comp.Lillian Goodman, (B) 30 May 1887, Mitchell, South Dakota, USA. (D) 23 January 1972, Los Angeles, California, USA.

Annette Hanshaw (October 18, 1901 March 13, 1985) was one of the first great female jazz singers. In the late 1920s she ranked alongside Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith and the Boswell Sisters. Her singing style was relaxed and suited the new jazz-influenced pop music of the late 1920s. Although she had a low opinion of her own singing, she continues to have fans because of how she combined the voice of an ingenue with the spirit of a flapper. Hanshaw was known as "The Personality Girl," and her trademark was saying "That's all" in a childish voice at the end of many of her records.

An amazing person, whose control of her ego enabled her to express her true self. Frank

I've been gradually coming to an appreciation of Annette, but this recording totally pushes me over the edge. What an incredible talent, almost effortless, but very feeling. Plus a self-accompanying pianist. I have long thought Marion Harris the best Jazz-age female vocalist, but here is the queen of music of the late 1920s and early 1930s.

Annette`s first commercial recordings are: Blackbottom Sept.12, 1926 and Six feet of papa Sept.12, 1926. There is a studio session (1925) of Annette singing several songs. These were not sold commercially! Grtz, Aad
