This quiet, gentle version of 'Angels Laid Him Away' by Lucinda Williams would probably meet with approval from Mississippi John Hurt. "Avalon Blues: A Tribute to the Music of Mississippi John Hurt" was released in 2001, and was a tribute to the gentle man of Delta Blues. Various artists joined in the album to make it a special edition: Chirs Smither, Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Steve & Justin Earle, Ben Harper, Gillian Welch, John Hiatt, and Taj Mahal among others. ENJOY!

A modern singer paying tribute to the great Mississippi John Hurt ( the gentle giant of blues). Enjoy!

Yes, it is. I think her performance was inspired. Actually inspired by Mississippi John Hurt...some might even say "channeled". It is incredible and a tribute to this wonderful Bluesman. Thank you for listening and commenting, Moppet (Barbara)

@beachdog67 Thanks so much for letting me know you liked the song. I appreciate it very much. Sometimes I don't get any comments & just hope that someone finds something they like. I love it when music affects someone this much! (I remember pulling over from driving the very 1st time I heard "For What It's Worth". I just couldn't drive it affected me so much.I'm probably much older than you though. It was NEW). Please stop by anytime! My best to you, Moppet (Barbara)

@barleyguitar I agree this is an excellent album. It seems that Mississippi John Hurt's music transfers well to modern artists. He was a gentle, musical genius. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment and add to the knowledge of the album also. I enjoy comments immensely! (I absolutely love Gillian Welch's "Beulah Land" but as you said, there are fantastic covers here.) I've been gone so I am sorry it's taken me this long to get back to you. My best to you, Moppet

@FloraThompsonWriter I hadn't thought of that word with this song, but it actually is even in the literal sense. I appreciate your comment in whatever sense you left it! I think this song is "sweet" as my kids say or "sweet" as in "it's a sweet song". Thanks for taking the time to comment. It is much appreciated. I've been out of town & am sorry it's taken this long to thank you. My best, Moppet (Barbara)

@BenjaminKuruga Thank you for your generous comment. I think Mississippi John Hurt would be very happy with the way Lucinda Williams did his song. You have a good sense of wording and gave me a nice smile tonight. Thank you very much! I have been out of town & then had other problems since returning. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to say "hello" & thank you for listening. My best, Moppet (Barbara)

@josephcormier I agree! The only version I like as good as this, or better, is Mississippi John Hurt's own version of his own song. I think she does this as she thought he would like it. (the slide work is perfect..it adds but doesn't overpower). Thank you for listening and commenting. I appreciate the time it takes to comment. Very few people take the time or even care enough to comment. It is appreciated. Thanks, Moppet
