Following my earlier comment, I have just listened to John McCormack again and, I don't know, it is actually quite wonderful but without the tear jerking emotion for which Al jolson was famous.

I have just listened to John McCormack's version of this. Wonderful as he was, one of the worlds greatest ever tenor singers, he could not surpass this Al Jolson version. Although a popular mass market singer of his time, Al Jolson had the most wonderful rich versatile tenor voice. And boy, could he put the emotion and pathos into his songs when he wanted to.

Very nice from a legend. This became one of Jimmy Roselli's singatured songs
