"The Weight", as originally recorded by The Band for their 1968 debut album Music From Big Pink, was used in the film but could not be licensed for the soundtrack. To deal with this, ABC-Dunhill commissioned Smith, who recorded for the label at the time, to record a cover version of the song for the soundtrack album

Gr8 cover. "The Weight" is a song originally by the Canadian-American group The Band that was released as Capitol Records single 2269 in 1968 and on the group's debut album Music from Big Pink. Written by Band member Robbie Robertson.

I checked wiki and this song is not on the A group called Smith album of 1969 ...however it is on the reissued album of 1984 ....its also on the easy rider album ...so the big question here is where did you get this recording of the song from Bro.?????I put my money on the easy rider album ...

The movie "Easy Rider" had the original "The Weight" by The Band. However, when they put out the soundtrack album, apparently they couldn't get the rights to the original. So the version on the soundtrack album is this one by Smith. For the film's music, Dennis Hopper used a scratch track of rock numbers to show the film to the studio and potential backers. It was supposed to be temporary, but they wound up using it; and the rest, as they say, is history.

I don't think so, there are good musicians there. I like their sound and the Last Waltz is a good work, among others.

Right. But The Band is still terrible.

Good thing for The Band and Carole King. Without them it would be the band called what?

Why this cover is better than the band's original? It's the same thing. they've tried to copy the band.

I saw that movie back in the 70's at the drive-in theater. It was an incredibly stunning ending. Thanks for the memory jolt. Hadn't thought of it in too long. :D
