John Frusciante - What I Saw

Album: Inside Of Emptiness (2004)

Inside of Emptiness is the sixth album by John Frusciante, and the fourth album of a six album series released from June 2004 to February 2005. It features Josh Klinghoffer and Omar Rodríguez-López as guest musicians.

Recorded in March and published in October 2004, John's fastest album to date might as well be the first one to think of when someone who hasn't followed his career and who's a fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers asks what to start with. From the distorted hot rocking beats of What I Saw to the melancolic falsetto of Scratches, with the floor vibrating from the screams in 666 and hearts melting at the warmth and openess of I'm Around and cruel reality of Look On, the song which features one of John's best guitar solos ever; Inside Of Emptiness is most likely the album where no skipping will occur, no matter who you are. Lyrically, just like all of John's other albums, it is much more complex. According to the author himself, three songs on the album were written while thinking about British occultist/mystic Aleister Crowley. Some of the music critics are refering to Inside Of Emptiness as something similar to what Shadows Collide With People would sound had it been unpolished and more raw. On the other side, this is obviously album where the electric guitar dominates, unlike on SCWP where each song has an accoustic guitar as the base instrument. Apart from usual contributor Josh Klinghoffer, the album also features a guest appearance of The Mars Volta's guitarist, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and therefore the first of two times he and John experimented with what John called "joined guitars". Introverted, yet somewhat furious, slow-speaking yet unstoppable as he's always been; John'd created yet another memorable chapter in the history of modern rock music.

Lyrics:

There's one room

There's one light

There's one night

In the fire

In the pain

In the wire

This from me

This one lie

That seems right

Time can't climb

It can't be

It can't see

I see to be right

I fall down tonight

I go to hell to be what I sell

Falling again is such a welcome end

Can the end of today be more than tonight

Echoes of these far reaching sights

Stuck with the pain of knowing you should have tried

Give me your hands

Give me your hands

Give me your ha-a-a-nds

And we'll never d-i-i-e

We'll never die, oh

This love song

It sits wrong

It means jack

The time's right

To be wrong

All night long

I feel good

I feel so far away

This is mine

It can be anyday

I saw what I saw

I call up a man

Distance is what gets me right in

I had a hand in everyone losing their place

Never must stop

It's stealing my heart

A moment to squeeze, beggining on its knees

I know I'll never be right beyond tonight

So, give me your hands

Give me your ha-a-a-nds

And we'll never d-i-i-e

We'll never d-i-i-e

Give me your hands

Give me your hands

Give me your ha-a-a-nds

And we'll never d-i-i-e

We'll never d-i-i-i-e

yeah it reminds a little tiny bit of Polly, but it's stupid to say he stole stuff.. it's normal for artist to be influenced by other artists, probably when he recorded this album he was listening to a lot of Nirvana! don't see anything wrong with that! This album kicks ass by the way, love it

I'm sure you've had a shit ton of replies in a year but the pre-chorus sounds alot like the vocal part to Polly by Nirvana.

POOR JOHN such a STRONG PERSON trying to keep on the RIGHT/WRONG path! I, now, know the TRUE meaning of this album as a whole. Damn it John why?! Oh well, it's YOUR choice. Just remember who you are, okay? Keep on making wonderful music as that's the only thing you're good for. LOVE ALWAYS 3

I don't find them similar to say the least... Not the same chords, tempo or melody at all. But it sounds a bit "Punkish" to me, I can't remember which song though. Maybe a Ramones one.

The pre-chorus does have the same chords as 'Polly' by Nirvana, but the rhythm and accents are all different, and the general timbre
