John Frusciante - I'm Around

Album: Inside Of Emptiness (2004)

Inside of Emptiness is the sixth album by John Frusciante, and the fourth album of a six album series released from June 2004 to February 2005. It features Josh Klinghoffer and Omar Rodríguez-López as guest musicians.

Recorded in March and published in October 2004, John's fastest album to date might as well be the first one to think of when someone who hasn't followed his career and who's a fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers asks what to start with. From the distorted hot rocking beats of What I Saw to the melancolic falsetto of Scratches, with the floor vibrating from the screams in 666 and hearts melting at the warmth and openess of I'm Around and cruel reality of Look On, the song which features one of John's best guitar solos ever; Inside Of Emptiness is most likely the album where no skipping will occur, no matter who you are. Lyrically, just like all of John's other albums, it is much more complex. According to the author himself, three songs on the album were written while thinking about British occultist/mystic Aleister Crowley. Some of the music critics are refering to Inside Of Emptiness as something similar to what Shadows Collide With People would sound had it been unpolished and more raw. On the other side, this is obviously album where the electric guitar dominates, unlike on SCWP where each song has an accoustic guitar as the base instrument. Apart from usual contributor Josh Klinghoffer, the album also features a guest appearance of The Mars Volta's guitarist, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, and therefore the first of two times he and John experimented with what John called "joined guitars". Introverted, yet somewhat furious, slow-speaking yet unstoppable as he's always been; John'd created yet another memorable chapter in the history of modern rock music.

Lyrics:

You know I'm around you

I wouldn't be if I didn't love you

I'm going to run through you

You know you're quite a character

It goes I haven't got a care

When we float down the river

I wonder will I lose you

When we roam through a blizzard

We'll joke and have another cry

I hope I'm not the other guy

We'll never scale those heights again

We've lost our daugther

Let's plan to hide from all our friends

In silent waters

No no no no no no no no

No no no no no

No no no no no no no no

No no no no no

Be careful of what you are

What you see is just a small part

You must look for yourself in others

And all the places that you go

You see that they are part of you

I want to again be holding hands

With you underwater

And couldn't we get a second chance

To go back and start over

I was thinking before (aaaah)

That it was all my fa-a-a-ult

We dropped the baton (aaaah)

Sunday waves and makes faces at us all the time (aaaah)

And I'm wondering what I call mine (ah)

Sunday waves and makes faces all the time (aaaah, ooh ooh)

And I'm wondering what I call mine (aaaah, ooh ooh)

(aaah)

When I listen to John's music I feel that I have an immense closeness with someone and at the same time I can only share those feelings of closeness with myself or a very rare someone. I feel this is music that people don't fully understand. It is deeply consoling and at the same time very lonely. I can express my joy for this music with the majority of people and that is both sacred and torturing.

John talking to himself with different voices ...such an excellent way to express his idea through sweet/sad contrasted melodies. Genius.

Exacty same chords as "The Past Recedes" yet, Frusciante and his genius vocal melodies make this an entirely different sounding/feeling song.

well, not really. people said that about the 80's when all the good bands of the 90's were already out there. People got depressed n shit when they just didn't look hard enough. I'm sure great music is happening at this time, we're just not putting enough effort to go out there n get it.
