@abqmufc Milstadt and Belleville are part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. They are less than 20 miles from downtown. Moreover, St. Louis was the first major city where Uncle Tupelo gained a fan following, from regularly playing in Cicero's basement bar. So yes, Uncle Tupelo was a St. Louis band.

They sure put a great spin on this song. Helped to turn me on to other Carter Family songs.

I know there was a lot of alternative country (because it wasn't mainstream) chronicled as far back as there has been radio....yes, including the 1950's "Bakersfield Sound". However, the term was not in existence then. It was created in the 1990's and refers to bands and musicians who did not want to sound all Nashvilled up. The low production style they drew on as inspiration is from 50s to 70s music, mostly. Perhaps, debate on the subject subject should be left to someone smarter than you!

@freetickeys Only a blithering idiot would consider Uncle Tupelo to be the "first alternative country band". They were late to the party by about forty years.

This is a good one!

Considered, by some, to be the first alternative country band, this song represents an era in music that shall long live through Wilco, Son Volt and a myriad of bands like The Bottle Rockets. Not bad, for the 5th best country band in St. Louis. Lesson: Don't let your indulgences overwhelm your friendships!

i love the shows they did with Brian Henneman. Having another acoustic guitar on stage really bolstered their sound and helped the country undertones really shine through on stage. Too bad he was only there for one tour- but the Bottle Rockets did make some great music on their own.
