This song is not about rejection and heartbreaks so much as it is about a woman who does not want to be tied down (get married) and want to be free still for awhile. In 1967 that was a very big deal! Hence the title and lyrics

When Michael Nesmith (yes, THAT Michael Nesmith of Monkees and Repo Man fame) wrote this song, the producers of The Monkees TV Show said it was "stiff." He took it to Linda Rondstadt, who recorded it two weeks later. Number One Hit and still a classic. Go figure.
