Starting with a tuning down half a step, the riff relies on octaves with a droning Eb to give it a jangling sound. To balance the tone, we chose the Diamond Compressor with has an optical circuit, known for preserving the natural attack while adding sustain and subtle compression. The compressor's EQ also helps beef up single coils and smooth the top end. 1979 also uses chords where the high b and e strings ring out and the even mix from the Diamond Comp helps them stand out in the mix.
