Agreed.......though why the original was left off the 5D album is the bigger mystery in light of the piss poor material on side two Crosby always maintained that he wrote Why on his own but McGuinn hassled him for a co credit jim

The first version beats this to dust, 100%. Why Crosby insisted on this being added to YTY and "It Happens Each Day" left out in it's place is a mystery. If he wanted a larger share of songwriting credits, the latter, solo-penned song would have been preferable, since "Why" was co-written by McGuinn. Maybe he wanted to prove he could "rock out"? (which he obviously couldn't - as this "rock" version of "Why" suffers loads. Gimme some of that raga instead!)

This is the the newer version...It sounds a bit forced...but polished. I think the better words to describe this would be "compressed for time" because it has lacks the "Eight Miles High"-Eastern-psychedelic vibe like the earlier single version. Nevertheless, consider it a polished gem, the single (or RCA) versions have a lot of good "ruff" on them.

McGuinn said Coltraine's "Ah Um" and Davis was always playing on their Tape Deck back then,so,yeah they were huge inlfuences,especially on "Eight Miles High" which mirrors Coltraine's colorful playing!

This was during their Coltrane /Miles Davis fascination phase, and the chords are like a wonderfully , modal -sounding version of "Heat Wave." . Respect !

This is the Younger Than Yesterday version. Awesome band. Losing Clark and firing Crosby gutted this band. What followed was outstanding in its own right...but different. The Gene Parsons, Skip Battin, Clarence White, Roger McGuinn might have possessed more instrumental virtuosos. Just not the same IMV though.

@mrmjb1960 "Why" was actually the last song on the Younger Than Yesterday album in a different version than the one previously recorded which ended up as the b-side to the "Eight Miles High" single. The single version of "Why" was included on the 5D CD reissue in the 90's only, but not on the original vinyl released in 1966.

Actually, this WAS on their "Younger than Yesterday" LP. I remember when I first heard this album in 1969. Blew me away.
