The backing track is a rare bootleg version of Rain that doesn't have the bass guitar or lead vocal overdubs on it and is at its original speed before the track was slowed to it's released speed. Recorded with a Ric 4003 direct into Logic Pro 9. I no longer own this bass.

"The Beatles recorded Rain over two sessions. On 14 April 1966, the same day Paul McCartney taped his bass part for Paperback Writer, the group taped five takes of Rain's rhythm track, performed quickly and later slowed down.

They finished the song on 16 April, adding overdubs including tambourine, bass and extra vocals. It is likely that the backwards vocals were added on this day, when they also carried out the mono mixes that appeared on the Paperback Writer single."

When did Paul start using the Rick bass in the studio? Did he use it for Rain?

Great cover .... And shows how Paul is a great bass player beside he's one of the best song writers in the history of music and also a very good lead guitar / piano etc and not a bad drummer too .. A true living legend!

In '66, I taught myself the Rain bassline on a ukulele. Sounded TFC.

Sorry if this is a stupid comment, but how do you record like this? Are you plugged straight into to a computer ?

Rain & Paperback Writer were the first really bassy tracks in 1966 as previous UK music didn't feature the bass on records like in the US. The English were reluctant to use too much bass as the tone arm on the record players would literally jump off. They admired the fullness & richness of the American records recorded in the early 60s, so the Beatles made the bass more prominent in their recordings from there on.

Awesome! Now repeat that while simultaneously harmonizing a vocal tune that's a completely different cadence than the bass line. Oh wait...compose that bass line first, then do the above. Or, for that matter, write the whole damn song before playing the bass line while simultaneously singing harmony. Now do all that over two days. And when you are done, compose a few more songs equally as good if not better. THEN we start to get an idea of Paul's genius!
