I found this isolated bass track on YouTube.

Paul McCartney played his 1964 Hofner 500/1 bass with a pick on this wonderful George Harrison composition from the 1969 Abbey Road album.

I had a blast transcribing this melodic McCartney bass line, which is one of his finest moments. You can hear every single nuances & inflection in Paul's playing. So I was able to come up with a pretty accurate bass transcription/tab of Paul's performance. You can check out my transcription in standard notation & tab at http://playbasslines.com/

On the Abbey Road recording, Paul & the piano play E-D-C at minute 1:43. Paul sound's like his E string is tuned to D there. This track has F-E-C at minute 1:43 for some reason. Is this taken from the original?

Paul mostly used his Fender Jazz Precision on Abbey Road, I don't think he used his Hofner bass at all, by the summer of 69 (Abbey Road sessions) that bass had been confined to the cupboard until he took it out again (following Elvis Costello's query) on the Flowers in the Dirt tour of 1989/1990 and only on a couple of songs, his main bass being a Wal 5-string bass on that tour...

And George thought the other Beatles didn't give their all to his songs? If Paul gifted me a bass line like this, I'd comb the breadcrumbs from his beard for life.

+Play Bass Lines Where did you get this isolated Track?

He's playing the Ric for the notes played on the G and D strings and the Hofner for the notes played on the D and E strings.

"there is some disagreement on the bass he’s playing. While most say it is his 1964 Hofner 500/1 bass, many others insist it is his Rickenbacker."Huh? They must have never owned a Hofner, like I once did, if they think it's a Rickie. I've owned both basses, and the higher up the fretboard you go on a Hofner, the more slightly out of pitch you go, like here.. Since I have absolute pitch, and listen and play semitonal licks accurately, I can hear it. Plus, his vibrato can *only be accomplished on a short necked bass like the Hofner* . There is absolutely NO question, or doubt about it.. it's a Hofner.

The Hofner pickups could produce a really strong signal that could overpower just about any preamp.

I had a Hofner, and it sounded like this. McCartney is my biggest hero.

Faul is a better bass player than Paul was.

George was initially unhappy with Paul's inventive lines here. He had wanted Paul to just stay in the pocket, not go all over the fretboard. Maybe he changed his mind in later years. I hope so, because this bass line, when coupled with the rest of the arrangement, is a work of genius.

I don't care if it's a Hofner or a Rickenbacker... Paul McCartney is THE BEST BASSIST EVER and that's what matters!!

This is the only song that Paul played on the hofner on Abbey Road...I think

I've always loved Hofner and never trusted the rumour that Paul didn't play it in recording studio.Of course I know that Paul played also Rickenbacker...but there are lots of pics in recording studio with Hofner...and if Hofner was not all that good why playing it live?
