Glen Gray and the Casa Loma Orchestra, recorded in Hollywood on July 23, 1937. This tune, the radio theme song for the Casa Loma Orchestra, is one of the smoothest and most beautiful ballads recorded during the Big Band era. With this arrangement, which juxtaposes Billy Rauch's upper register trombone over a full clarinet section playing in the lower register, the Casa Loma Orchestra approaches the sublety of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Clarinet solo is by Clarence Hutchenrider. It is said that Billy Rauch practiced his trombone solo for half an hour before each broadcast, so he would continue to play it perfectly. Many other bands "covered" this tune, but none featured a copy of Rauch's solo. From the original 78 rpm record. Accompanied by a slideshow featuring images from the days when Hollywood considered cigarettes to be an essential glamour accessory. Enjoy!

Such a tragedy Glen had ill health. He is up there with Tommy, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman (193o's) and any of the great big bands. Smoke Dreams ,No Name Jive, and so many more. What a band.

Wonderful song...one the best. P.S....Chesterfields were, actually, great cigarettes. Some of the best, right up there with Dunhills. For those who smoke...ha-ha...

also listen to alot of old time radio programs,...many of them were sponsored by cigarette companies, and some of them even recommended that their brands were actually a benefit to your status

A little equalization can go a long way. That's Clarence Hutchenrider on the clarinet; I had the pleasure of knowing him; a fine man.

Smoking pretty well cleared the world of smokers, too, especially the movie stars pictured in these old ads. Most of them died of smoking-related heart and lung diseases.
