@ledrotten I don t understand.......maybe they didn t have a good manager, maybe they were dressing to foolishly or they tried to involve the audience too much. I think it is also becoz of the negative media and the fact that Americans in general were not ready for "glam"...... Awesome all the way, agreed, they engineered a whole unique sound in the eighties, evolviong from one genre or style to another, never lost their brilliance to creat a catchy tune. One of the best rockbands, ever.

@bigmagic96 Why did the media turn their backs on them?

@bigmagic96 I see, but Americans have a weird taste. I don t like American hardrock like van Halen, Aerosmith, you name it. They all have sampled or taken inspiration from Slade. Thank you for your perspective.

@bigmagic96 I see, thank you for your perspective. I did not know all these things, but you were very close to where it all happened. How does it feel, I know what Noel gallagher commented about it, one of the best songs ever written easy, I don t understand why such a great song did not chart in the US. I saw on the Slade Documentary that they were too flamboyant for the Americans. Ozzy Osbourne said they should have been the biggest thing since the Beatles! he was right!

@bigmagic96 I am not very fond of I am a Rocker, anyway it is a cover of Chuck Berry ain t it? Baby s Got it, hmmm, so so. I forgot Wheels ain t coming down, that is a great song from RTB and Lemme Love into Ya, I think that has a great tune! I saw live performances here on youtube of Lemme Love onto Ya and it looks very interesting.

@carlphone That was one magical night because after touring the US for 18 months plus all their previous tours here and around the world they were ultra slick and professional and had something to prove. Sadly the media turned their backs on them and they went back to playing small gigs wherever they could. I was amazed they still wanted to carry on but so glad they did as I got to see them again in 78, 79 and ofcourse in 1980 they trashed Reading and the world wanted to know again.

@carlphone While they were away in the US punk had hit big here and the old bands just got swept away. They returned in 77 to a country that had largely forgotten them. Whatever Happened To Slade was released to general apathy and didn't chart. They still hadn't cracked the US and spent a large amount of their fortune playing to people who apparently didn't want to know or buy their records. However, they toured here in 77 andI saw them for the first at The Bham Hippodrome. TBC

@carlphone These are the reasons: they felt stale in around 1974, made Flame and felt stale again in 75. The only place they had not conquered was the US so an all out assault was made to crack it in 75. By the release of How Does it Feel they were no longer guaranteed top 3 hits as they had been 'in the face' of the country since 71 and I suppose a backlash was brewing. The album Flame only reached no6 and Nobody's Fools only made no 14 and left the charts after only 4 weeks. TBC

@carlphone To be honest Carl I don't recall, I was just miffed that they only reached number four! So why is it you have only recently been Sladified? What was it that made you realise they were, are and always will be the greatest band to ever walk this Earth?

@bigmagic96 I have always liked Hold On To Your Hats, Nuts Bolts and Screws, I'm a Rocker and, I'm Mad to a degree. However, since getting We'll Bring The House Down on CD and listening to the RTB tracks on there I have to admit Don't waste My time, Sign OPf The Times, Ginny Ginny, Baby's Got It and Wheels Ain't Comin Down have grown on me and now quite enjoy listening to them. Will never like Lemme Love Into Ya and Chakeeta though.

@bigmagic96 Which were the first 3 "best bands of the planet" in 1974? Beatles, Stones ....?? Intersting stuff, I did not know that!

carlphone

@bigmagic96 That is amazing, so in 1974 they had it right that Slade were one of the best bands on the planet! They still are one of the BEST EVER. RTB as I said is a very good album, has some great tunes. Nothing wrong there, I wonder why Slade went to obscurity???

bigmagic96

@bigmagic96 So whatt do you think of RTB now?

15 years назад

bigmagic96

@bigmagic96 Don't forget in 1974 they were voted Britain's best band, best live band and number four best band on the planet. They had had incredible success, sold millions, made a film, conquered everywhere except the US and then, obscurity. Look At Last Nite had come true. They didn't know what to do for the best, so RTB was the result.

@bigmagic96 What situation was that.?

15 years назад

bigmagic96

@bigmagic96 Well I have pondered this for many years. I think it's because we had just been treated to three of Slade's most wonderful albums, Flame, Nobody's Fools and Whatever Happened to Slade which were loaded with great song writing and production and then RTB. Stripped bare - bordering on under-done, cheesy poppy songs and about 10 mins short of the usual album length. Didn't want to knock them for it, I think it just reflected the situation they were in at the time. Still loved them tho.

@bigmagic96 For Slade standards, 4 or 5 good/great songs on one album is relatively low, the quality of most albums is so high, that 8 or 10 songs are fantastic. I find that most great bands that are listed in the top 20 of greatest in Rolling Stones magazines lists etc. only have a small fraction of the number of great tracks Slade have! But on return to Base, I think Ginny Ginny, Sign of the Times, I am mad, Chakeeta, Don t waste your time and 9 to 5 are really great tunes!
