1972/1968 (Shirley Bassey delivers an excellent combination of rich soft tones along with high fidelity big notes on these two Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs. Shirley has recorded many Bacharach/David songs over the years, and the ones she has chosen means she in some way has personally identified with them.
The first song, 'One Less Bell To Answer' was recorded and released on Shirley's 1972 LP titled, 'I Capricorn'. Shirley is a Capricorn! The second song was recorded 4 years earlier in 1968 on her LP titled, '12 Of Those Songs'

LYRICS - One Less Bell To Answer:
One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
I should be happy
But all I do is cry (Cry, cry, no more laughter)
Oh, I should be happy (Oh, why did he go)
I only know that since he left my life's so empty
Though I try to forget, it just can't be done
Each time the doorbell rings I still run (I still run)
I don't know how in the world to stop thinking of him
'Cause I still love him so (Love him so)
I end each day the way I start out crying my heart out
Oh, one less man to pick up after
No more laughter, no more love
Since he went, oh, he went away (He went away)
(One less bell to answer) Why did he leave me
(Oh, why, why did he leave)
Now I've got one less egg to fry (One less bell to answer)
One less egg to fry (Oh, why, why did he leave)
And all I do is cry
(One less bell to answer) Because a man told me goodbye
(Oh, why, why did he leave)
Somebody tell me please (One less bell to answer)
Where did he go, why did he go (Oh, why, why did he leave)
How Could He Leave Me
ABOUT A House Is Not A Home:
"A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 song recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick. Written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the song was a modest hit in the U.S. for Warwick, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". Two weeks earlier, a competing version by Brook Benton had debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Benton's version split airplay with Warwick's, and ultimately peaked at number seventy-five. The Brook Benton version of the tune was used as the theme for the film of the same name.
Warwick's version of "A House Is Not a Home" fared better in Canada, where it was a top 40 hit, peaking at #37. The song made the R&B top 10 in Cashbox by both Warwick and Benton, with neither artist specified as best seller.
LYRICS - A House Is Not A Home:
A chair is still a chair
Even though there's no-one sitting there
But a chair is not a house
And a house is not a home
When there's no-one there to hold you tight
And no-one there you can kiss goodnight
A room is still a room
Even though there's nothing there but gloom
But a room is not a house
And a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart
Now and then I call your name
And suddenly your voice appears
But it's just a crazy game
When it ends, it ends in tears
Darling, have a heart
Don't let one mistake keep us apart
I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stairs
And turn the key
Oh, please be there
Still in love with me
I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stairs
And turn the key
Oh, please be there
Still in love with me
