1972/1968 (Shirley Bassey delivers an excellent combination of rich soft tones along with high fidelity big notes on these two Burt Bacharach/Hal David songs. Shirley has recorded many Bacharach/David songs over the years, and the ones she has chosen means she in some way has personally identified with them.

The first song, 'One Less Bell To Answer' was recorded and released on Shirley's 1972 LP titled, 'I Capricorn'. Shirley is a Capricorn! The second song was recorded 4 years earlier in 1968 on her LP titled, '12 Of Those Songs'

ABOUT the song, One Less Bell To Answer:

"One Less Bell to Answer" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Originally written in 1967 for Keely Smith, the song was rediscovered in late 1969 by Bones Howe, the producer for The 5th Dimension, and the song was included on the group's 1970 debut album for Bell Records, Portrait. Lead vocals on the single were sung by Marilyn McCoo. The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 4 on the Best Selling Soul Singles chart in 1970. It also went to No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart that same year. Rosemary Clooney had a national Easy Listening chart record of this song in 1968. Barbra Streisand partially covered the song in the medley One Less Bell to Answer/A House is Not a Home on her 1971 album Barbra Joan Streisand. In 1972 Shirley Bassey recorded this on her album I Capricorn. Vikki Carr, Michael Ball, Vanessa Williams, Trijntje Oosterhuis, and Sheryl Crow have also performed covers.

LYRICS - One Less Bell To Answer:

One less bell to answer

One less egg to fry

One less man to pick up after

I should be happy

But all I do is cry (Cry, cry, no more laughter)

Oh, I should be happy (Oh, why did he go)

I only know that since he left my life's so empty

Though I try to forget, it just can't be done

Each time the doorbell rings I still run (I still run)

I don't know how in the world to stop thinking of him

'Cause I still love him so (Love him so)

I end each day the way I start out crying my heart out

Oh, one less man to pick up after

No more laughter, no more love

Since he went, oh, he went away (He went away)

(One less bell to answer) Why did he leave me

(Oh, why, why did he leave)

Now I've got one less egg to fry (One less bell to answer)

One less egg to fry (Oh, why, why did he leave)

And all I do is cry

(One less bell to answer) Because a man told me goodbye

(Oh, why, why did he leave)

Somebody tell me please (One less bell to answer)

Where did he go, why did he go (Oh, why, why did he leave)

How Could He Leave Me

ABOUT A House Is Not A Home:

"A House Is Not a Home" is a 1964 song recorded by American singer Dionne Warwick. Written by the team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the song was a modest hit in the U.S. for Warwick, peaking at #71 on the pop singles chart as the B-side of the top 40 single, "You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart)". Two weeks earlier, a competing version by Brook Benton had debuted on the Billboard Hot 100. Benton's version split airplay with Warwick's, and ultimately peaked at number seventy-five. The Brook Benton version of the tune was used as the theme for the film of the same name.

Warwick's version of "A House Is Not a Home" fared better in Canada, where it was a top 40 hit, peaking at #37. The song made the R&B top 10 in Cashbox by both Warwick and Benton, with neither artist specified as best seller.

LYRICS - A House Is Not A Home:

A chair is still a chair

Even though there's no-one sitting there

But a chair is not a house

And a house is not a home

When there's no-one there to hold you tight

And no-one there you can kiss goodnight

A room is still a room

Even though there's nothing there but gloom

But a room is not a house

And a house is not a home

When the two of us are far apart

And one of us has a broken heart

Now and then I call your name

And suddenly your voice appears

But it's just a crazy game

When it ends, it ends in tears

Darling, have a heart

Don't let one mistake keep us apart

I'm not meant to live alone

Turn this house into a home

When I climb the stairs

And turn the key

Oh, please be there

Still in love with me

I'm not meant to live alone

Turn this house into a home

When I climb the stairs

And turn the key

Oh, please be there

Still in love with me

Purchased the I Capricorn/And I Love You So double album from Amazon two weeks ago and have played it at least 10 times. I could play One Less Bell To Answer until the disc disintegrates! This double album is in my opinion Dame Shirley Bassey's masterpiece. If you love her, you should get this, it has been digitally remastered. The CD And I Love You So contains a fabulous rendition of Richard Carpenter's Someday.

Like Sinatra, once Shirley sings a song, the song becomes her own! You might think you’re hearing her voice, when in reality you’re listening to her heart, both of you together under the covers.

Bassey loves to cook, but cleaning, not so much. Housekeeping does that. Shirley didn't sing this song as a medley; they are complete songs that I pieced together because of Burt Bacharach. What is this 'own' business anyway. You like Streisand's voice, that's great. And, what about the wonderful Dionne Warwick? I think Warwick fans would have something to say about your comment. But, this is Bassey's website, so negative comparisons of her against any other artist is uncalled for.

In other words, you like Dame Shirley when she sings more like Barbara Streisand. Got it! The difference between Shirley and Barbra is that Shirley CAN sing both ways, which is a tribute to her impressive vocal abilities. Shirley fans love how she can move her voice around, and hit amazing notes, some soft and others raising the roof. It's less boring than a singer than just doesn't have these capabilities.

IMHO, Dame Shirley's best rendition of Bacharach/David is "Anyone Who Had A Heart".

Marilyn McCoo is an authentically "American" sounding singer. She is one of our greatest American singers of all time. Love her voice. However, Dame Shirley sings 'One Less Bell to Answer' magnificently. Both songs featured here are sung wonderfully well by the Dame. The slideshow is terrific. At 4:03 --- Wow! How original is that! Thanks for sharing.
