South Australia's Redgum, along with the likes of Goanna and Midnight Oil, were at the forefront of political comment through their music. Their biggest hit had been "I Was Only 19", a protest song against the futility in Vietnam. These sort of songs also brought them to the attention of ASIO (Australian Security Intelligence Organisation) and so it is little wonder that John Schumann should find another topic to write a song about.

my x girlfriend told me about this song.this song effectively ended red gum as a band.hey everything is legal and everything goes. your life in databank A.S.I.O. By the way this was before the INTERNET. I had a friend more than 10 years ago volunteer for the C.I.A.,he gave his name only, no address. he got a reply approximately 2 weeks later from the C.I.A. saying they know they know who to find if and when they need them11 years назад
