1:44 I presume this was from when he was closer to 18 LOL. It does get really cool as it develops though. What stream of music is this from, or what was he listening to that made him want to try this?

I remember reading that Pat used to check out Van Halen in the 1980's. He also once called EVH a "post-coltrane saxophone player". Surely he's combining the Mean Streets intro with Bailey-like extended technique during the synclavier freakout.

Many ppl don't realize that Pat started out early in his career playing with the likes of Cecil Taylor and Leroy Jenkins et al before he went solo. He was an avant gard player back then. Every know and then you can still get an avant gard piece of music out of Pat. Whether it's and outside piece like Forward March or something he does in concert, he still puts it out there ever so often.

Scrap Metal is one of the pieces Pat never recorded. I am glad everytime i hear it at a concert. The part we see in the video is just a solo out of this masterpiece. Hope to see the PMG soon in germany.

After watching this, I think Dana Carvey must have used Pat Metheny as inspiration for his character Garth in Wayne's World. That hair and laid-back, tight-lipped, "values" of the Mid-west.

@GreatBigChangeComin Do not underestimate his genius. He might sick the Orchestrion bots on you.

Only Pat Metheny could do something utterly stupid and unmusical and make music doing it. Unfortunately I think this is something Pat enjoys doing more that anyone enjoys listening, guitar queers notwithstanding.

I heard on a Secret Story Tour gig in 1993 a tune that he played an acoustic guitar and made very noisy sound some times by cracking the metal strings so hard. It was untitled and totally different from Zero Tolerance. This video solo reminds me of it.

actually I think what he plays here is a lot more interesting than "zero tolerance for silence"

Yeah it's called, "Zero Tolerance For Silence." I have it and I would not buy it if I were you. I thought it was a joke or just something he needed to get out. He said that the idea was to do a 2 dimensional view of his music by taking away the element of pitch. That's why in the PM songbook it describes it as "Monochromatic" language. Interesting but not something I want to listen to all the time.
