The problem with changing lyrics is when does it stop? "The Darkies are gay" becomes "the folks are gay", but now "gay" has a new connotation. When can we just grow up and enjoy the music and lyrics that represent the usage of the time.

Except this is 1964. I'm not sure "politically correct" was a known term then.

"Politically correct" cheapens things. The lyrices were changed from "'Tis summer, the Darkies are gay" to "'Tis summer, the people are gay." Losing the term "darkies" is merely the right thing to do. I suppose to be "politically correct" in a conservative sense, you could say "'Tis summer, the people are flaunting an abhorent lifestyle".

The words were officially changed by the State of Kentucky in 1986 to be politically correct.
