Great but very creepy song written by Kurt Weill and performed by his wife Lotte Lenya in 1930 . Later covered by The Doors.

Such wonderfully twisted phrasing. Weill was so unbelievably well skilled at setting this creeped out modern poetry! It was also the very first song of Brecht's that Weill set to music, back in 1927. (It's now quite well substantiated that Brecht's female secretary, Hauptmann, actually wrote the bulk of the lyrics. She had a much better command of English than Brecht did.)

Makes the theme to 'The Exorcist' sound like the Barney Song. " I Love You, You Love Me..."

It is better still in the original German! Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny: Alabama Song"" (The Rise and Fall of the city Mahagonny)

I love hearing Lotte Lenya sing Kurt Weill's compositions. There's something about her voice that I really enjoy.

Bertholt Brecht wrote and published this as a poem...later Weill set it too music for Lenya. I grew up listening to an album this was on. Also Edith Piaf

Love Lotte Lenya love this song. Dave Van Ronk recorded with the correct gender: "oh show us the way to the next pretty boy". The Doors did not nor did David Bowie. What a great recording by Lenya.

The poet Bertholt Brecht actually wrote the lyrics, Kurt Weill arranged to music.

I just heard the Doors performance for the first time. It is not faithful to the original. The altered melody is especially disappointing but the entire performance lacks the intensity I've heard in other performances. This performance is much better.

I can't explain. It's not a word I use often. I was simply indicating Lenya is regarded by followers of Weill as the authority in interpreting his music. And I'd like to add, I was very fortunate to see her perform in The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny many years ago. I think it has to be his masterpiece. It celebrates all of his touchstones -- musically, symbolically, socially. Weill is very complex, not an "easy listen" but worth the extra effort.

This song conjures the vision of a dead man in a 1920's three piece suit and bolder hat doing soft shoe w/ cane- rotting. . .

This song actually is part of the Weill/Brecht opera "Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny." It has much more to do with the decadence of 1920's Germany than rock and roll.
