Well Beaumont, everyone gets different things out of a song. But Joan Osbourne said it was a song for her daughter so the photo montage that someone put on youtube to accompany the lyrics is actually in line w the artist's intention when she recorded the song

I love the picture montage that you (or whoever) did for this in here, so it makes me feel bad to counter it but I cannot read it any differently than that it is an confession of love and an entreaty to enter into romance, a secret one. I read it as people that have been friends but now, at least one has developed must stronger feelings. Whether it's adulterous or not is not clear, but the strong secrecy would point to it. Maybe it's just social pressure dictating they shouldn't be together.
