Kirsty MacColl - There's a guy works down the chip shop, swears he's Elvis 1981

Oh darling why d'you talk so fast

Another evening just flew past tonight

And now the daybreak's coming in

And I can't win and it ain't right

You tell me all you've done and seen

And all the places you have been without me

Well I don't really want to know

But I'll stay quiet and then I'll go

And you won't have no cause to think about me

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

Just like you swore to me that you'd be true

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

Oh darling you're so popular

You were the best thing new in Hicksville

With your mohair suits and foreign shoes

Lou says you changed your pickup for a Seville

And now I'm lying here alone

'Cause you're out there on the phone to some star in New York

I can hear you laughing now

And I can't help feeling that somehow

You don't mean anything you say at all

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

Just like you swore to me that you'd be true

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

(Instrumental)

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

Just like you swore to me that you'd be true

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

He's a liar and I'm not sure about you

Kirsty Anna MacColl (10 October 1959 – 18 December 2000) was born in England of Scottish (England born) singer-songwriter and political activist Ewan MacColl and dancer Jean Newlove. She wrote and recorded several pop hits between the early 1980s and the 1990s. In addition, she sang on hit recordings produced by her then-husband Steve Lillywhite, notably on tracks by The Smiths and The Pogues. At the age of 41, MacColl's life was cut short by an accident in Mexico.

This song was released in the US a year later in 1982 as "There's a Guy Works Down The Truck Stop Swears He's Elvis." Don't remember this ever being a hit in the US (surprising given how big Elvis's popularity was then, five years after his death).

Surprised her music never made it over the US.

Kirsty was a great singer, daughter of Ewan MacColl, what a shame and loss to music they both are

Love this lady, fabulous artist in a bittersweet way with a large dose of irony, taken from us too soon but I am certain she is wowing others in a different universe XXX

Great video. Yes she had major problems with stage fright but you would not know that from this clip, its a great performance. I always get the feeling looking at that video she was trying to play by what her record company wanted her to do in it [just to see what it was like for once]. If my feeling is correct than its clear she had the ability to pull it off and could have been one of those flash in the pan popstars. Thank god she had the drive and intelligence to stick to her guns and make the music she wanted. Just a shame she was taken far to early and leaving behind so little work. She recorded some of the greatest music of all time, making the music she wanted to make how she wanted to make it. R.I.P Kirsty
