Kirsty MacColl - There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis 1981

(10 October 1959 -- 18 December 2000)

Oh darling why'd you talk so fast

Another evening just flew past tonight

And now the daybreak's coming in

And I can't win and it ain't right

You tell me all you've done and seen

And all the places you have been without me

Well I don't really want to know

But I'll stay quiet and then I'll go

And you won't have no cause to think about me

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

Just like you swore to me that you'd be true

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

Oh darling you're so popular

You were the best thing new in Hicksville

With your mohair suits and foreign shoes

News is you changed your Pick-up for a Seville

And now I'm lying here alone

'Cause you're out there on the phone

To some star in New York

I can hear you laughing now and

I can't help feeling that somehow

You don't mean anything you say at all

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

Just like you swore to me that you'd be true

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

(Instrumental)

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

Just like you swore to me that you'd be true

There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis

But he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

I said he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

I said he's a liar and I'm not sure about you

He's a liar and I'm not sure about you

The Hell-Bent Kind

German audiences only scream for Tony Sheridan, the Beatles, and Scorpions. If you ain't Tony Sheridan, the Beatles, or Scorpions...forget it, you're getting the stone face. The best clip of Kirsty doing this song (there're a bunch) is from the BBC4 Artists Sing Elvis special. She's real lively in that version, actually gets to sing live, and the audience loves her. She had stage fright and could be timid sometimes in front of an audience, but in that clip, she's all cheeky and charming. Look for it; it's the one where she's in a black vest and blue t-shirt. This clip is hard to watch. She's moving her ass off, and those crumby Germans are just giving her the old "YOU'RE not Tony Sheridan" treatment. What a bunch of phonies.

@ James and Praise: The concept of this show in the 70s and 80s was not that the people dancing around in the area.First information, then write.

I think it's a French audience/TV prog. They were the same when the Who played!

I wonder if Kirsty was miming and no music was filtering into the studio, that could be an explanation for the very very strange non-reaction of the audience, if not who knows what was going on because this is a great song from one of the best!

But he's the only guy who's actually MOVING so that's probably why they took a shot of him! LOL! The rest of the audience looks pissed off! :-D

By German law at the time if was required that every member of the audience have a corncob stuck up their butts prior to entering the auditorium. I have seen Cheap Trick and REM videos from the time in Germany, pretty similar response. They got better, look at the video of Bruce Springsteen in East Germany, particularly the bra-less gal he pulled out of the audience to dance with him "Dancing in the Dark".

I think the audience is dead,I saw an AC/DC video where people just stood around like Vulcans, afraid to express any emotion.

The audience look like they just got a shot of Novocaine. Then again it might have something to do with a British singer singing a Great "Country" rock song IN ENGLISH on a DISCO show IN GERMANY.

Truth is Adam, your dad didn't pull out quick enough. When you are on the Liverpool Care Pathway, lying in your own shit and gagging for water, nobody is going to care about you. Your life will have amounted to a few offensive troll posts and thats it, Kirsty on the other hand was appreciated by many and her passing was a sad day.

From the titles at about 2.20, I assume this is from a German tv show. Hence why they didn't understand the lyrics.
