'Galveston' by JIMMY WEBB

-from the 1972 album LETTERS-

-Regarded by many critics as Jimmy's best solo album, "Letters" finds Webb working in a number of styles, but none quite so devastating as his simple, acoustic rendition of the hit he penned for Glen Campbell, 'Galveston'.

i wasn't familiar with Jimmy's original until we got Rdio at work . I of course liked Campbell's version, but I thought Keith Urban did a great job. This is kinda right at the other end. People forget Jimmy can really fucking sing. And play piano....search for his performance of The Highwayman on the Joolz Holland show.

Another trivia about this song is that it was ranked last year as number 8 of the greatest Country/Western songs ever written. Think how many number one hits have racked up over the last 50 years and you get a grasp of just how regarded JW is in the music world. He did other genres of music and had 20 or so singers record his "MacArthur Park" Galveston, recorded by Glen Campbell was a number 1 hit but played in 4/4 time instead of JW's 3/4 version. It was not written as a country song, more a reality of Viet Nam song for the longing of a drafted soldier stuck over there longing for home.

Terry/Deltaframes, Jimmy is probably around 72 years old. Google is body of work and you will be amazed to the fact that you have been listening to JW all of your short life.

Personal, I love the intro. Maybe that's because I'm a guitar player with an appreciation for unusual tunings. there's a lot of harmonics going on that imply notes you hear but aren't actually played. That's magic in my book. I've tried to figure out the tuning and thought I had it but then couldn't figure out how he played the progression in that tuning. So, I play it in the key of E and rock back and forth from a E to an Emaj7 for an intro. I think something most people don't get in the Glen Campbell "entertainer" version is that this is an anti war song written in a year that saw over 16000 US troops killed. This is NOT a patriotic song according to Webb. These are images of yearning and longing to from a homesick soldier who does not want to be there to his girl in Galveston. Anyone know the tuning?

Found this song after Ricky Gervais talked about it, and I gotta say.... it's really crap! Won't be taking music advice from Ricky anymore!
