it was never about vietnam, maybe he should add his signature to McNamara's self crippling biography.

I have read where Jimmy Webb visualized the soldier in this song going off to fight in the Spanish-American War; two years before the hurricane that ravaged the town and a port from which a soldier might have embarked for Cuba in 1898. So I've never thought of it as a "Vietnam" song, although the time when it was written leads to that interpretation. I think it is supposed to reflect a young man's angst about ever going off to war, universally, as it is.

oldwest517 , Music transcending politics? That's a bizarre notion. There is nothing about music and no music ever written that didn't have a political implication. It is inescapable!

Jimmy Webb is an amazing talent -- like many songwriters, not great singer and wouldn't make it as one, but I love to hear how he sings his own songs. Once you write them, you let them go and others make them fly in their own ways.

One of the best American songwriters in the last half century! Love this version of a great song!

Just like so many other guys in show biz, Jimmy was a draft dodger, like Jay Leno, David Letterman, just to name a few. Meanwhile 2 million young men and women served in Viet-Nam.......Where were these COWARDS????????!!!!!

Looking at some of the comments here - it seems that Glen Campbell was doing Jimmy a huge favour by doing his songs. It could be as easily argued that Glen got rich off the back of Jimmy's songs. I bet the poster has never written a song in his life.

Reminds me of Tom Waits singing his own songs, in a way....slightly harsher, but infinitely more deep and textured than the hit artist renditions.....what a mind to come up with such precious melodies and lyrics...

i think its interesting how a studio crew/arrangers morph this kind of song into something more conventional, and commercial.Gap between the original and final outcome is extremely pronounced.Congrads to ALL involved,so pro.

Thanks for pointing out that performance of the two of them together. It was nice to hear Webb say that time that he wasn't complaining about Campbell's version at the time, "because it was top ten." Webb would have been a much poorer and less famous guy without Glen Campbell. And I didn't say he was mocking Campbell -- just his version of "Galveston." It is hard to interpret his comments fairly in any other way.

Best of both worlds; See here on the tube , 'Glen Campbell & Jimmy Webb Galveston.' It's a duet where Glen kills singing the above version with Jimmy Webb on piano. And no, Webb was not mocking the legendary Glenn, They got to much respect for one another.

Very moving interpretation. Too bad he ruined it for me by mocking Glen Campbell's version. So much for music transcending politics. Jimmy Webb has money and fame mainly because of Campbell -- you'd think he'd be a little more gracious. Webb chose to write the song in an ambiguous way (probably to make it more commercially successful), so it is open to widely various musical interpretations. I'll bet that Webb's political conscience didn't keep him from cashing the royalty checks.

It is simply amazing how the tone of the song changes so dramatically with JW's slower ballad version. This is my favorite version of this song.

I like both Glen's and Jimmy's versions. They are 2 entirely different songs to me. At the end of hearing Jimmy's version, just now, I find myself asking myself what just happened to me. I was 'living' in the song and felt emotion I never felt while listening to Glens's perfectly-sung version. I still like both version though.
