Jimmy Driftwood entertained the George Peabody College for Teachers graduation breakfast in 1959. He sang and played his long bow. I heard a wonderful story about him coming to Nashville with his wife and his visiting the music industry. Peabody is now owned by Vanderbilt and they turned this great institution in to offices for Vanderbilt bureaucrats.

Yep, Doc and Johnny are so associated with this song that few know that Jimmie actually wrote it. It's not only beautiful musically, but lyrically it has this perfect poetic story arc, which has so much wonderful imagery of a long-ago wild country and a simpler yet still dangerous time. It's both tough and tender, just a stunning American classic song! Oh, and I absolutely love that northern Arkansas accent Jimmie had!

I played this song with Jimmy and been to his house on several occasions..My Grandparents were in the original rackensack society.. They toured with Jimmy for several years..I am grateful for the memories,and playing music with Jimmy and Cleda Driftwood, Uncle Floyd Holland , Bookmiller Shannon, and so many others but especially to Waco and Lucy Johnson my Grandparents who lived well into their 90's We owe a lot to these people..

We just heard that this song may have been written about one of my husbands ancestors. A Goodman. Does anyone know anything about this? Somehow Jimmy is related to the Goodmans. I'm putting the tree together and haven't got to that link yet, but I see a lot of knew and were related to Jimmy on this thread, so if anyone has any info, please let me know.
