Jimmy Driftwood and my grandpa lived in the same town. Every summer until Driftwood's death my Gpa would take us to Mountain View to hear him play.

Jimmy Driftwood entertained the George Peabody College for Teachers graduation breakfast in 1959. He sang and played his long bow. I heard a wonderful story about him coming to Nashville with his wife and his visiting the music industry. Peabody is now owned by Vanderbilt and they turned this great institution in to offices for Vanderbilt bureaucrats.

I grew up with this back in the 70s and 80's, thanks for posting! From my Chevy Chase days as a kid (old man and his were big Johnny Cash fans)...

Yep, Doc and Johnny are so associated with this song that few know that Jimmie actually wrote it. It's not only beautiful musically, but lyrically it has this perfect poetic story arc, which has so much wonderful imagery of a long-ago wild country and a simpler yet still dangerous time. It's both tough and tender, just a stunning American classic song! Oh, and I absolutely love that northern Arkansas accent Jimmie had!

That voice is smoother than a fine linen feed sack. Timeless listenin' late at night, when the 'skip's a runnin'. Thousand miles is no sweat for a big ol Hot AM antenna.... across the Mexican border. Course that was 'Back in the day". :>)

We just heard that this song may have been written about one of my husbands ancestors. A Goodman. Does anyone know anything about this? Somehow Jimmy is related to the Goodmans. I'm putting the tree together and haven't got to that link yet, but I see a lot of knew and were related to Jimmy on this thread, so if anyone has any info, please let me know.
