The 'Original' Bad Boys from Boston: The J. Geils Band's famous live version, with front-man Peter Wolf's spoken, rap-like, intro to one of their greatest hits. It's on their 1976 landmark "Blow Your Face Out" live album which came out a good 3 years before the first Hip-Hop song "Rapper's Delight" landed on the Billboard charts. And by the way: No one is claiming that this was the first "Rap," all I was saying was that this song came out a few years before Rap slipped into the mainstream. I'm well aware that Rap has been around for a long time, it just did not get popular on the national level until the 1980's. Therefore, this song was no doubt ahead of it's time!

Wolf was always a crazy lead singer and showman. He's known for his funny stories and epic introductions. He used to be a radio DJ for the beloved, and unfortunately now extinct, 104.1 WBCN Boston station during the 1960's before he joined the band. His radio personality was the "Woofa Goofa Mama Toofa." This song is certainly a classic rock staple and years ahead of its time. Heck, it's even "genres" ahead of it's time! Only so many songs can claim such a unique feat!

Lyrics:

(Spoken)

Now hold on, this song has a little introduction to it

It ain't supposed to be sad, though you might feel it that way

It's a song about desperation

Every now and then we do get desperate

This is a song about L-O-V-E

And if you abuse it, yer gonna lose it

And if you lose it, yer gonna abuse it

And if you abuse it, you ain't going to be able to choose it

'Cause you ain't going to have it further on down the line

Things ain't going to be so fine

Yer going to be sitting there on your little machine

Tryin' to look and keep it clean

You're going to be home playing bingo all night all alone

That's why you're sittin' there by the telephone

And you know that she ain't going to call you!

So you put on the TV and you're watchin' Johnny Carson

Segueing right into the "Tomorrow Show"

But that don't got the go

So you turn it off, ya turn on the radio

The radio don't seem to get the click

So you say "Hey man, I can't lickety split"

You start to open up a little book

And there's somethin' there you got to overlook

And you say "Baby!

You know there's somethin' on my mind!"

You say "Baby there's somethin' on my mind!"

I know that you're home, and I know you ain't all alone!"

So you start walking over to her house

You get over to her house

And you walk over to her door and you start poundin' on her door

And you say "Open up the door bitch

This is Woofa Goofa with the green teeth, let me in!"

Well, she opens up the door and then you just kinda walk up to her And say "Baby",

(Say Baby!)

You look up, way up at her green mascara

And you say "Oh my darlin',

You know her and me was at the party as friends

Do not believe what they say

That's only gossip that they tellin' ya down the wisecracker line"

You say "Darlin'!"

Take your big curls and just squeeze them down Rotumba"

What's the name of that chick with the long hair?

(Rapunzel!)

I'd say "Hey Rapunzel! Hahaha

Hey Raputa!

(Raputa the Buta!)

Hey Raputa the Buta!

Flip me down your hair and let me climb up to the ladder of your love!"

'Cause this is Woofa Goofa sayin' to ya

"Love comes once and when it comes you better grab it fast

'Cause sometimes the love you grab ain't going to last

And I believe I musta!

You know I think I musta!!

You know baby I think I musta!!!

You know I think I musta!!!!!

I Musta Got Lost!!!!!!

(Sung)

Never thought about tomorrow

Seemed like a long time to come

How could I be so blind, baby

Not to see you were the one

I let you slip on from me baby

I let you walk on by

Refused the love you had for me

I refused the love and I let it die

Musta got lost

Musta got lost

Musta got lost -

Somewhere down the line

Musta got lost

Musta got lost

Gave away them days you were mine

Don't know why I let you leave me

Honey, I don't know

Say it's hard to see love coming baby

But honey I have a way of seeing it go

Musta got lost!

Musta got lost!

Musta got lost -

Somewhere down the line

Musta got lost!

I got lost!

Givin' away the days you were mine

Love can be a sweet thing

Girl, I just don't understand

Made a game outta lovin' you

And now I hold the losing hand

Musta got lost

Musta got lost

Musta got lost -

Somewhere down the line

Musta got lost

I got lost, girl

Givin' away the days you were mine

I just don't understand it, I just don't understand it

I just don't understand it

And I musta got lost

Musta got lost

Musta got lost -

Somewhere down the line, hey!

Musta got lost, baby!

I got lost, girl!

Givin' away them days you were mine

Musta got lost

I got lost

Musta got lost -

Somewhere down the line

Musta got lost

Oh I got lost, girl

Givin' away the days you were mine

Oooh I got lost!

Double crossed

You're lovin' - give it to me on the organ!

I said you're love

Got me higher than I ever been lifted before

I said you're love

Got me higher than I ever been lifted -

Ooooooooh!

Greatest live album ever. Saw them at the Cleveland Coliseum when they were touring for Love Stinks. One of the best shows that I have ever seen. Definitely one of the most under rated and under appreciated American bands. I don't think anyone else has matched their energy or stage presence. They worked magic on stage but had a hard time translating that into record sales. When they finally had a number one record, it all fell apart. Indeed, one fantastic band.
