I think it was unquestionably murder, and many people would say she had it coming! This is a wonderfully tragic ballad performed magnificently by the incomparable Mr Frankie Laine; who was perhaps the greatest of all the balladeers... Thanks for posting.

I have heard this song performed by Tom Jones and although he makes it more dramatic this version is much better

@powerpuffkewpie Since I first heard this song in 1967 I thought he was going to commit suicide - that he was in utter despair. The instrumental background music, especially the strings during the part which talks about pulling the trigger, suggest profound sadness as opposed to anger. Yet the lyrics *are* ambiguous. I wonder what the composer was thinking - perhaps it was meant to be deliberately ambiguous.

@markalson1938...as you say, it's a matter of taste. No question that Frankie Laine was one of the 20th century's musical giants. Brook Benton's version got fairly heavy airplay in my hometown (Baltimore) and was the first version I heard...so (to me) it's the "original" version. Frankie Laine also recorded a Gene Pitney hit..."I'm Gonna Be Strong", although I believe that Laine's version actually pre-dated Pitney's version by several months.

@Delfan1961 I have heard Brookes version of this song. He does a great job on it. It is only a matter of taste which you perfer. To me once Frankie sings a song few can top it. But That's just me.

Brook Benton had a wonderful version, as a Reprise single, in 1967, also serving as the title song for an album. Unfortunately neither single nor album has yet made it to CD. I prefer Brook's version to Frankie's, though all the versions I've heard (so far) have been good.
