Growing up in the 50's was a great time to collect records. Not only was it the time when all the great artists were creating the roots of Rock & Roll, but also the time when the great singers of Easy Listening were recording wonderful music which Charted along with the rest of popular music. Don Cornell was one of these artists who sold millions of records in the 50's. The song " I " was one of my favorites. With that great voice and the very powerful full orchestra ending, it just had to be a great hit. Thank you for posting it.

I played with Don for a week at the Summit Club in '65. Very enjoyable! The club was owned by Joe Torre, who was the Brave's manager then. 'might have been '66.

Don was very popular back in the forties and fifties. In the 40's he was one of the most popular Big Band vocalist with Sammy Kaye Band. Then as a solo act from 50 - 55 then Rock did him in like it did a lot of singers. But was still popular on the Night Club Sean

Why he did not become more popular is a mistery. A really fantastic voice. To bad we have to listen to the junk they call music today.

@markalson1938 I agree. Seems to me that Don didn't let his full voice out until later in his career. In the late 1940s, crooning, or at least relatively light singing was the trend. After Laine broke through, the record companies lost their fear of big, powerful voices:) -

this song takes its melody from DRIGO's (1846-1930) Serenade.

Cornell always had the BIG voice, Sammy Kaye kept the lid on him. If you ever listen to any of the old Sammy Kaye records featuring the Three Kaye Dets listen for Cornells voice.

Don was a great singer. When he was with the Sammy Kay band he was more a crooner like Dick Haymes. Then in the fifties when he went on his own he changed his style to more of a Belter like Frankie Laine. But he was great in either style.

I love this song! I've got the original single and it gets spun quite a bit when I go through the old vinyl! Thanks for putting the song up! Classic!!!! Rolland B. Heiss

Don always had a great voice, but changed his singing style in the fifties. When he was with Sammy Kaye he was more of a Crooner, then when he whent on his own he became more of a belter more in the style of Frankie Laine which in my opinion is for the better.
