The named themselves after the Simple Minds song, The Cocteau Twins. That song is about two men obsessed with Jean Cocteau´s work.In his book " Les Enfants Terribles " , that is about the secret, made-up language of two siblings.This could explain why Cocteau Twins lyrics seem as though they are chosen solely for aesthetic value. Some are made up sounds. Its what they did.

I have liked them since 89 but for the longest time I thought they were a french band. I mean w/ the name Cocteau and not understanding the lyrics and then overlapping female vocals I thought there were 2 female singers (Twins). I still don't know how to say "Cocteau" or know what it means
