Hadn't listened to this in a long time; was a sharp commentary back in the day, even more now, I think.I don't know if it was intended, but the big wheel and little wheel image always made me think of the vision of Ezekiel, a symbol of judgment on mankind, but also the spinning of our own wheels, for good and ill. And perhaps with the image of the little being manipulated by the big.Anyway, worth a listen.

I concur with your sentiments. I believe many who grow up with Buffy Sainte-Marie and even those who have only listened to her music only once carry a special message with them from time to time whether it is personal or political. Her lyrics are powerful. She is an amazing woman :)

because she speaks truth and is not compromised by money,prejudice or false piety. She just sings and speaks truth and love and reality of what is - and all the others sing what money wants to hear - sex, distraction, denial etc., not Buffy. She sings and speaks what is real and what will be and what they do not want to know. All their songs won't change what is; and Buffy is singing about that what is that no one wants to hear. But they will. Maybe never from her, but it will come to pass.

I love how the reprise gets gradually more raspy and weirder/creepier. It suits the symbolism of the wheel spinning and "what goes around comes around" sort of message. She's an amazing artist.

im not an expert but my take on the lyrics is that shes basically singing about the natural law of consequence and karma, that evil deeds done by a person will accumulate over time and inevitably come back to bite him/her, wether they like it or not. The use of the imagery of a wheel spinning is sort of like a warning to an impending danger or doom in the future,as the wheel of time spins and spins, nearer and nearer will we come to the day where we will be judged.
