+Jesse Compton +Auden Lewis Hi there, I'm a huge fan of BE and all things Conor... I was reading your comments and discussion about The People's Key and thought I would share my experience. I got it when first released and didn't care for it much the first few listens, with the exception of Ladder Song which is brilliant. So I put it on the shelf, so to speak for a couple years and then I started listening to it again sometime around summer last year 2014. I listened to it only while driving in my car and even though it was 1 of 6 cd's in my car stereo, I basically kept it on repeat and listened to it almost exclusively for several months until I had memorized the lyrics to every song. It is still in my car and I listen to it in rotation with the other 5 cd's, one of which is Fevers and Mirrors. At first the commentary by the Preacher/Shaman persona really irritated me and I would fast forward through it. The longest of these rants is at the beginning of the album and lasting around 2:25... but it is a theme of Bright Eyes to begin all of their albums with some sort of dialogue. Anyway, after listening to it so many times now I have really come to love the album! It really grew on me and I listen to each song now, and sing along. I think it takes listening to many times until it grabs you. I sometimes listen to all of the Shaman's speeches as well, as I've come to expect what he is going to say next, and how funny it is because of what he says or how he says it. So... just wanted to say that I think you might enjoy this album more if you give it more time and listen to it until the words are committed to memory and the lyrics begin to resonate with you. Some lyrics that I really love are from the song Jejune Stars and I'll copy them here for you:"So I go, umbrella under my arm, into the green of the radar...How'd it get so dark in the day?It's just so bizarre, is it true what we're made of?Why do I hide from the rain?"Think about this... it's a rainy day and he is questioning why he would hide from the rain... because we are made up of mostly water... Brilliant, right?! :)

The word perfect is pretty subjective, I'll give you that. Granted, I loved the theme of the people's key, and I can't say I don't like any of the songs. I've never actually disliked anything Conor has made, Bright Eyes or otherwise. I liked The People's Key, but even Conor said before it was released that they were planning a completely different sound for TPK than previous albums, so it makes sense some Bright Eyes fans don't like the album.

I don't think Conor could ever go downhill. I mean, the sound changed, but it wasn't bad. Everything he's ever made has been perfect. This year makes seven years that he's been my savior, my hero, and I know I'll always have him in my heart. I want to meet him so badly, just to thank him for everything he's done for me, because I wouldn't be who I am without him, and I have him to thank for my happiness.
