Anyone have an idea on where to get a tuner like the one JT is using that shows the cents in a digital display? The only one I've been able to locate that does that is the free Guitar Tuna app for IOS and Android, but it doesn't seem to be as precise as the one in the video.Thanks.

Thank you for this!!! This method has put an end to literally years of frustration for my piano player - and myself. I never understood why the guitar would sound right when I played an E chord, but not when I played a G; likewise, I could play an F chord that sounded right, but if I capoed up three frets and played F as the D chord shape, it wasn't right. Using your technique has resolved these problems nicely. Thanks again!

I had noticed over the years that my guitar sounds better if I tune the first string slightly sharper and the 5th and 6th string slightly flatter than the others, but this method refines the technique and gives exact offsets for all the strings. The difficult thing is finding a tuner that gives you a good cents indicator. The people over at the local guitar and music stores couldn't figure out what I was talking about, and none of the tuners they had included this feature. I finally found an inexpensive Seiko tuner with a digital cents indicator, their SAT 101 model.

How long have you been doing this for?

Id have to agree that there might be something off with the nut. However, moving it would only address the tuning issue of one string and not all equally. If his high E string is being tuned at minus three cents and that was fixed with the adjustment of the nut bringing it to zero there would still be an issue with the other strings. His low E which was originally tuned at minus 12 cents would still need to be tuned at nine cents. Originally 12 cents minus the 3 cent adjustment. This reminds me of the Spinal Tap bit where the amps went up to 11. Its all relative to what Zero is. James is still right in that certain strings vibrate sharper than others in an acoustic guitar. Maybe because of the thickness and the wider vibration of the strings relative to the electric strings.

I was hoping he would play all first position chords after he finally tuned it so we can hear it first before running to our guitars. Will this method work will electrics as well with different gauges and tunings?

I work on and tune guitars on an industrial scale- literally thousands per year since 77. I've seen and tried every tuning method under the sun. All I can say is if you're trying to understand the subtleties of tuning at all, you're way ahead. Find your own personal tuning fascets that works for you on your guitars. Good luck.

The only thing I was missing that you let us hear the result of that way of tuning. BTW does this work for other tunings as well or just for the standard tuning?Greetings from Bonn/ GermanyTorsten

There's no question that it works for JT. However, I think as a global rule, it depends on how hard the capo is clamped on making each string a little sharp. If you have a capo with a screw adjustment, you can minimize sharpness by using JUST enough pressure to prevent buzzing and position the capo immediately behind the fret instead of centered between the two lower frets. Taller frets will be even more susceptible to sharpness. I would be curious to see what JT's values are AFTER the capo is already on (say on fret 2 or 3) which is a common spot for him. From the video, it looks like James is using the "settled" values as opposed to the sharper "initial attack" values. I must not be squeezing my capo as much because for me it was too much. James is right (of course :) guitar notes usually go sharp due to capos, finger pressure, and other laws of physics. I think James' results might also be achieved by just putting the capo on FIRST, then tuning with no cents or at least fewer cents flat. Then take the capo off and see what it maps to with your guitar and capo combo. Granted, it's a little harder to tune with the capo on. It doesn't immediately respond to small tuning peg changes. To get those little 1 and 2 cent changes you have to just gently stretch the string to flatten it, or push down on the string on the head stock side of the nut to sharpen it. I have a really nice tuner app on my IPad called CLEARTUNE. It's a really big display and pretty stable especially when, as James recommends, you hit the octave harmonic. It also helps to gently mute the other strings so it's just the one string being tuned that's ringing.

John Doole (below) Do you really think JT would buy a guitar with a nut in wrong position ? !! If he goes through all of this detection over cents, don't you think a genius such as he, a perfectionist, that he would be naive enough to not check the nut ? And I'm sure he tunes all his guitars this way ... If this guitar in video were the only one with a nut off he'd find his theory wrong by it not improving and in fact disturbing to the other ones WITH perfect nut placement..I'm not sure what make this one is, maybe a Taylor (!).But if it cost less than 5K I'd be surprised. You know he has work done on them all and maybe does it himself..There are most likely custom built for him to boot. These instruments for a concert performer are primo........Thanks James for being here "In my life" time....My religion is " Imagine"..... Mark
