This song is about a guy who watches his girl leave on a train and promises to write. It is often performed with train whistles.

Jolson sang this in The Jazz Singer, which is the first feature-length movie with talking sequences. The song was also recorded by Gus Kahn, Ted Fio Rito, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo (all in 1922) and by Eddie Cantor, who also popularized the song. Cantor (real name Israel Iskowitz), was called "Banjo Eyes."

Al Jolson (May 28, 1886 -- October 23, 1950) was an American singer, comedian and actor. In his heyday, he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer" Blackface is a form of theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows, and later vaudeville, in which performers create a stereotyped caricature of a black person. The practice gained popularity during the 19th century and contributed to the proliferation of stereotypes such as the "happy-go-lucky darky on the plantation" or the "dandified coon". blackface minstrel shows were the national art of the time, translating formal art such as opera into popular terms for a general audience. Early in the 20th century, blackface branched off from the minstrel show and became a form in its own right, until it ended in the United States with the U.S. Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The Netherlands continues to celebrate St. Nicolas Eve with Zwarte Piet in full blackface Moorish costume.

This song is NOT about "a guy who watches his girl leave on a train." HE is the one leaving, not her. Just listen to the introduction:Yesterday I heard a lover sigh Goodbye, oh me, oh my Seven times he got aboard his train And seven times he hurried back To kiss his love again and tell her

I take offence to skin whiteners being on wide sale in Africa - is this so that they can whiten up for the X factor?

It was used in performances, and not originally meant to be offensive. But sometimes it was used to portray people of color in a negative way. So both sides are correct in their own way. But just bc it's used by some negatively doesn't mean that's it's intended purpose. But then again, if that's how you've only seen it well it can be considered offensive.

If your black and do not think black face is offensive. You are saying its ok to let an other race. Belittle, demean and purge or heritage and pride. Shame.

He was an over the top stylist, larger than life, exaggerated mannerisms & the black face was another kind of code in his act "I can be this wild because I'm being a 'negro' but its ok because I'm in my black face..". In spite of or because of all that,he was a huge"pop" phenomenon and still has a fiercely loyal cult following. This ridiculous blackface stuff carried on till quite recently in the Black & White Minstrel show.In Cape Town coloured people still put on black face for The Coon Carnival
