I much prefer Al Hirt's silky smooth trumpet styling to the screeching high notes that seem to be Maynard Ferguson's stock in trade. Yeah, Maynard can hit those high notes like nobody else I've ever heard, and in my almost 8 decades on this ball of dirt I've heard 'em all. But as far as I'm concerned good music is meant for enjoyable listening, not for showing off how high or low you can go, either by voice or by instrument, and enjoyable music is where Hirt excels.

My music teacher, Mr. S., in 5th grade told his students that Al Hirt slurred his notes and to avoid such a style of trumpet playing. He was a cool guy but listen for yourself. I think maybe he was jealous.

Honey in the Horn is nothing less than a Tour-De-Force Album, and Al was unbelievably good on it. I still have the LP, which my Dad bought in 1964.

Incredible . Gives me Goosebumps. From lowest to highest octaves and never miss a breath. Never has there been the talent that exceeds the horn ! Still miss the sounds of his in the 60s growing up .

Absolutely! Many of the songs he recorded would have been corny played by lesser talents. In the hands of the genius, Big Al, though, they are renditions of pure musical virtuosity. Hirt never played a corny note in his life.

No matter how hokey the tune (don't have a better word) ... Mr Hirt never played a note that was not a note of great musicianship! Absolute Master imo.
