I much prefer Al Hirt's silky smooth trumpet styling to the screeching high notes that seem to be Maynard Ferguson's stock in trade. Yeah, Maynard can hit those high notes like nobody else I've ever heard, and in my almost 8 decades on this ball of dirt I've heard 'em all. But as far as I'm concerned good music is meant for enjoyable listening, not for showing off how high or low you can go, either by voice or by instrument, and enjoyable music is where Hirt excels.9 years назад

My music teacher, Mr. S., in 5th grade told his students that Al Hirt slurred his notes and to avoid such a style of trumpet playing. He was a cool guy but listen for yourself. I think maybe he was jealous.10 years назад

Absolutely! Many of the songs he recorded would have been corny played by lesser talents. In the hands of the genius, Big Al, though, they are renditions of pure musical virtuosity. Hirt never played a corny note in his life.10 years назад
