The opening track to Al Hirt's 1963 album, "Honey in the Horn" and one of my all-time favorite performances of his.

Al was an Amazing trumpeter in any gandra, period. He was as comfortable in playing Jazz, Dixieland, or in this case a sweet ballad. He had a great range, articulation, and a heavenly sound. Should I say more?

So very clean! We got Honey in the Horn in 1964. Dad taught me to play a cut down version of Java. (I was 10 at the time.) It was a big hit at the Poland (town of) variety show that year. Mom played piano for me. Meantime, Dad played Finicule Finicula in the same variety show (Dad being James B. (Ted) Hanson).

I grew up on Al Hirt records. Always enjoyed the other big names with a horn, but no one hit home for me the way he did. Today, 50 years since I first heard his tone, can pick his licks out of a lineup. Was he the "best" or the "greatest?" For me, yep. Does that leave room for someone else to have other favorites or greatest? Sure. But, none of their faves touched my heart and ears the way he did. I remember being mortified when he was hit in the mouth with a brick (rock?) while playing in a parade in New Orleans and the joke he shared with Doc Severinsen later that night. Maybe after the years I played trumpet and tried to copy his style, if I ever get to music heaven, he'll let me play horn with him. Sweeet.

I miss Al and this powerful rendition of a classic melody speaks for itself. What tone and range Al had. I know---ALL the other greats like Harry James, Maynard, etc did also but I still like Al's version the best.

QuazyQat: You are correct! Bunny Berigan didn't said that; Louis Nunley did. I was speaking from (faulty) memory. Here is the quote from the jacket cover of Al Hirt's 1963 RCA album, "Honey in the Horn," which I dug out and checked as a result of your observation. I have it in front of me now: "On one date, Al was scheduled to do "I Can't Get Started," a perennial favorite that most knowledgeable musicians feel should be left alone after Bunny Berigan's incomparable rendition. Especially wary was Louis Nunley, a member of the vocal chorus and a good trumpet player himself. When behemoth Hirt finished with that fine song, however, Nunley sat down and said, "I'll never pick up my horn again." Thanks for pointing that out for the readers. I should have dug out the album before commenting, which brings to mind an old Chinese proverb:"The palest ink is better than the best memory."

Harry O..You might be interested to know that after listening to Al Hirt's rendition of "I Can't Get Started" for "Honey in the Horn," Bunny Berrigan was reported to have said, "I'll never pick up my horn again."

He did an entire album of vocals with Ann-Margaret entitled "Beauty and the Beard" (RCA, 1964). He wasn't a very good singer, but, as a trumpeter... ...He's giving Gabriel -- and God -- trumpet lessons today. R.I.P., Jumbo; I'll see you again soon.

I dont understand these standard jazz guys who talk down Al Hirt,Kenny G,Maynard Ferguson,Grover Washington,Earl Klug,David Sanborn just because they dont play that mindless dragged out infernal NOISE they play that just goes on and on without a real tune or melody. Almost all of Al Hirts albums were recorded spectacularly with terrific sound. Very clear and his backup musicians were top notch. Whats wrong with Boots, Chet and Floyd Cramer. Al IS the King...no doubt for this guy...miss him
