I love hearing musicians sing from the POV of the opposite sex, not because I am gay-centric, but because I think it showcases the performer's ability to tell a story that is not their own and still make it heartfelt and believable. Dar does this in "Highway Patrolman" with equal impact. Another great example in the same vein is Rodney Crowell's "I Wish It Would Rain".

I used to only like this version, but I like both now. There is a third version of Fred doing it live, and he puts the capo on the first fret and moves the Key up to F Major, and plays it a little quicker. Try to listen to it sometime.
