The song relates how life (television, relationships, where we live etc.) keeps one from self-discovery. The only way the subject can be 'closer to me' (I would guess both companionship and emotional maturity are implied) is through leaving behind what interferes. This is only a beginning to understanding the song, as it is too complicated for a 450 char post.
