This was a great song. Unfortunately the album was ruined by Get on Your Boots. Marketing that piece of rubbish as the opening single was a bad move. This song would have been an epic first single!

It actually is about a heroin addict and his moment of surrender though. Bono created characters to write lyrics too during the No Line On The Horizon album.

U2 is one of my favorite bands, but it kinda shits me a little that they so often throw in some clue that the "you" in the song is a messed up woman, "your lip stick trace" in this case. Feels to me like it would often be better to let us see in the song who we see, but it's like Bono is too manly to just sing a song without trying to make it somehow a tragic romance with this same one dimensional messed-up-girl character. There's a random thought...
