But I came to this because I remembered seeing Phil as a soldier or an airman, doing the song. This isn't QUITE the way I remembered it. But it was a long time ago.

On a "You Bet Your Life" Groucho said to a 73-year-old man, "You've seen two world wars, the stock market crash, 'Yes, We Have No Bananas' and 'The Thing.' I'm wondering why you didn't just shoot yourself."

The Dick van Dyke show brought me here. I also looked up the lyrics. And found this song disturbing. :/

I recall hearing a cover of this on Wonderama - host Bob Mcalister used it as the music for the on three-legged guy trick. It used a horn effect instead of the drum/foot stomp. It may well have been Rolf Harris, sounded a bit like him (and would have made sense sine the "Jake the Peg" it was a trademark for him), but I've never heard it again. Any guesses?

Thanks Number One and Randy for finding this! Really cool, the tie in to the Hawks' Sci Fi classic is so slick, so Hollywood.

I bought a copy of 1951's Wild Blue Yonder on DVD from lovingtheclassics, in hopes of getting a better version of this part of the movie. Unfortunately, the version I got had been edited way down (18 minutes missing) and this song was not included. It hardly matters, though, because the lovingtheclassics DVD appeared to be made from a second-generation VHS copy recorded from TV -- it was absolutely horrible quality. So, thanks again for posting this here ;-)

Okay, your hints were enough for me to track down the movie this song was from: Wild Blue Yonder, 1951. I just ordered a DVD (it's in the public domain) from a website called Loving The Classics for $15. If I can get a crisper version off the DVD I'll post it to YouTube. Of course it's possible that the DVD will just be a copy of the old VHS tape ;-) Thanks again for taking the time to post this video and answer my questions.

Thanks for the comment. I found this clip on an old VHS tape. I think it came from a movie but do not know which one. According to Wikipedia: The song aired on radio concurrently with a series of teaser ads which ran weekly in Collier's promoting Howard Hawks' science fiction movie, The Thing from Another World. The Hawks film was released April 6, 1951. While the song had no connection with the movie, some suspect it was a clever marketing tool to increase interest in seeing the film.

This is so great! I have a pinball machine made by Chicago Coin called "Thing," made in 1951, that's based on this song. The center of the playfield has a mystery box where you can shoot the ball. If you Google "Chicago Coin Thing pinball" you'll be able to see pictures of the game. Where did this video originate? Was it from a movie, or ??? I'd love to find a higher-resolution version. Thanks for posting this!
