Cliff perhaps it wasn't their pitch that "walked away". Perhaps the monitor mix was bad (or non-existent). Another scenario.. the FOH mixer was unfamiliar with the vocal parts and didn't get it right. Happens a lot in clubs. I've done it myself and I feel bad, but if you get a band you are unfamiliar with, you don't always have a sound check. You jump in and do the gig. Meanwhile tape is rolling ;)
